Still training after all this time
It is hard to believe but here I am a year later. My how time flies. This time last year I had just begun training for my first long distance run while planning a wild adventure for my big 50th birthday. A year later I'm training for my second long distance run while making plans to do some vacationing at the same time. Tom, Kevin and I, are doing the Disneyland® Half Marathon Weekend. April will be there along with Kevin's girlfriend Crystal to cheer us on. I'm sure April would love to be running with us but she has a triathlon at the end of the month

What can I say ~ she is the hot shot of the family:) We are all extremely proud of her and somewhat mystified at times. How she has managed to hook all of us into running is still a question but here we are.
Training and running for me is about 80% mental. I have friends and family tell me that they could never run a mile or that they never really liked running or running distance. I find it all very amusing. I was once that person. What I didn't realize before I did it was that it is all in what you decided to tell yourself and what your willing to accomplish. One of my goals throughout my life has been to maintain a very physical lifestyle. Regardless of children or work. I didn't want to be one of those people who finds themselves glued to a chair or a couch. I didn't want to wake up one day and find that I was no longer able to climb a few stairs or adventure out into the world. I love hiking, rollerblading, golfing, fishing and now running. I admit, it has it's moments. Like getting up at 4:30 a.m. in Scottsdale to run every morning before it hits 100 or running a 6 mile road race with temps in the 80's and humidity at 80 also. Having a bee fly into your sweaty face and sting you. Passing on a fun night out to get up early and run. But then there are the other moments. Running with your children at 5:00 a.m. and laughing through the miles as you hear all about their life. Running down the greenbelt watching 4 birds who are bopping their heads to Tina Turner singing Rolling on a River on your ipod. Sitting in your vehicle watching a guy strip naked after a race because he doesn't realize that your there behind your tinted windows ~ laughing. And yet there are still the other moments. Running your first 6 or 8 or 10 miles and feeling the freedom from all you've told yourself prior to doing it. Passing rabbits on the bike trail, deer on back road or coyote's on South Mountain. Being out with mother nature and smelling the fresh autumn morning air. The positive moments and commitment to myself far out way anything my brain can try to come up with to detour me.
