Cinco in Sioux Falls is stinko

Cinco de mayo is May 5th and since I can remember it has been a huge celebration in Arizona. When I came to the mid-west to live I incorporated the event into our traditional parties. Most our neighbors had no clue what it was about but gladly joined in. Mexican food back then was something you ate at Taco Johns or Chevy's. Eight years later Sioux Falls now has several mom and pop authentic Mexican food places and a few better chains then Chevy's. Last year they created the first Cinco de mayo fiesta at Falls Park ~ parade included. I did not attend that event since I was not in town. However, this year I had the pleasure of experiencing it. The parade started at 1:00 p.m. and ended at 1:15 p.m. It had to be the shortest parade on record!! The parade started with our Mayor being pulled in a coach by horses. Then 50 Hispanic people marching with their Mexican Flag's. Next came 3 men on horses with large sombrero's. Then the end came with 15 antique cars. Standing with our mouth's opened wide we decided to move onto the park and the fiesta. My ears immediately picked up what I would call Spanish rap music coming from huge speakers while the Sioux Falls female roller derby in full outfit skated to the music?! Hmm ...... Sioux Falls idea of a marachi band I guess. Tom ran off to the smell taco's while I went to find a place for us to sit. As I wandered around I came upon the BEST sight of the whole fiesta. As I laughed till I had tears rolling down my face I decided this was a picture worth a thousand words and would explain everything.

I keep telling myself this is only the second year for this event but I think from here on out you will find me in Scottsdale at Salty Senoritas www.saltysenorita.com or at home with our BIG Marg machine and friends!!!!
